The sample is dissolved in a mixture of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid, and oxidized with a minimum of nitric acid.

Generally, the tantalum values in solution are converted into potassium tantalum fluoride (K 2 TaF 7) or tantalum oxide (Ta 2 O 5). The niobium is recovered as niobium oxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) via neutralization of the niobium fluoride complex with ammonia to form the hydroxide, followed by calcination to the oxide.
